Oscar Hijuelos, the son of Cuban immigrants, was a novelist and a recipient of the Rome Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. His seven novels have been translated into twenty-five languages.
