Lionel Basney

Lionel Basney (1946-1999) was a poet and professor of English at Calvin College. His poems appeared frequently in Christianity and Literature and The Sewanee Review, and he was the author of the nonfiction book An Earth-Careful Way of Life: Christian Stewardship and the Environmental Crisis. His essay "Immanuel's Ground" was anthologized in The Best Christian Writing 2000 and The Best Spiritual Writing 2000. His essay "Teacher: Eleven Notes" was included in The Best Christian Writing 2002 and received The American Scholar's award for Best Essay in January 2003. In Basney's honor, the Conference of Christianity and Literature created the annual Lionel Basney Prize, which is awarded to the outstanding article of the year in Christianity and Literature.
