Christopher Smith lives and writes as part of the Englewood Christian Church Community on the urban Near Eastside of Indianapolis, where he is founding editor of The Englewood Review of Books. Smith is coauthor of the 2014 Readers’ Choice award winner Slow Church: Cultivating Community in the Patient Way of Jesus (2014). He has also written Reading for the Common Good (2016) and How the Body of Christ Talks: Recovering the Practice of Conversation in the Church (2019).

All of Smith’s work — reading, writing, speaking — focuses on helping congregations cultivate a deeper life together by reading, thinking, imagining, and most importantly, by talking together. He regularly teaches these interwoven practices in congregational, academic, denominational, and ecumenical settings.

He and Jeni Newswanger Smith have been married for almost 20 years. They have three teenage children and live intentionally as part of the Englewood Christian Church community in the Englewood neighborhood.
