Ashley Lucas

Ashley Lucas teaches at the University of Michigan. She is currently one of the faculty leads on a large-scale humanities archival project called Documenting Criminalization and Confinement. Previously, she was director of the university's Prison Creative Arts Project. Her book Prison Theatre: Performance and Incarceration (2020) examines how incarcerated people all over the world use theatre to advocate for themselves and improve their lives. She is also co-editor of an edited volume entitled Razor Wire Women: Prisoners, Activists, Scholars, and Artists (2011), and the author of an ethnographic play about the families of prisoners entitled Doin’ Time: Through the Visiting Glass, which she has performed as a one-woman show throughout the U.S. and in Ireland, Brazil, and Canada.
