Ernest Gaines

Ernest Gaines (1933-2019) was an author best known for his books The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman (1971) and A Lesson Before Dying (1993), which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and won the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction. His other novels include Catherine Carmier (1964), Of Love and Dust (1967), In My Father’s House (1978), and A Gathering of Old Men (1983). Gaines was a MacArthur Foundation fellow, was awarded the National Humanities Medal, and was inducted into the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres as a Chevalier.
