Mariano Avila
Theology
Mariano Avila-Arteaga is Professor of New Testament at Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was born in México City, where he served as pastor of six Presbyterian churches. Avila has also served in the Seminary of the National Presbyterian Church as professor, academic dean, and president.
Avila-Arteaga was a member of the Biblical Translation Committee (International Bible Society) that produced the Nueva Versión Internacional. He is one of the translators of the Traducción en Lenguaje Actual (United Bible Societies), a translation in contemporary Spanish from the original languages.
Avila holds a B.A.Th. and an M.Div. Licenciatura en Teología from Seminario Teológico Juan Calvino and from Universidad Evangélica de las Américas, respectively. He also holds a Th.M. from Calvin Theological Seminary, an M.A. in History from Temple University, and Ph.D.s from Westminster Theological Seminary and Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana. He and his wife, Rosa María, have two adult children.
